Oh dear Ethos, I suspect one day you will look back on this silly analogy and cringe with embarrassment.

"Why bother quoting anything pre-Rutherford since the Society has disavowed any of Russell's writings??"
They haven’t disavowed them entirely, i.e. end of the Gentile Times in 1914. But even if they had disavowed them all, they still try to cover up Russell’s mistakes with deliberately misleading statements that amount to little short of lies. Just a sample of examples where they try to make it appear that Russell taught what JWs teach today;
Awake! January 22, 1973, page 8 - “Jehovah's witnesses pointed to the year 1914, decades in advance, as marking the start of "the conclusion of the system of things."” (decades in advance JWs said 1914 was the end of the time of the end not the start of it).
Revelation its Grand Climax is at Hand (2006) 105 - “Charles Taze Russell and his fellow Bible students realized decades earlier that 1914 would mark the end of the Gentile Times … While they did not in those early days fully understand what this would mean, they were convinced that 1914 was going to be a pivotal date in world history, and they were right.” (Russell thought 1914 would be a hell of lot more than pivotal, and he did fully understand it, he just got it all wrong)
What Does the Bible Really Teach? (2005), pages 84-85 - “When Jesus told his followers to pray, "Let your kingdom come," it was clear that the Kingdom had not come at that time. … There was a waiting period. … During the 19th and 20th centuries, sincere Bible students progressively discerned that the waiting period would end in 1914. World events that began in 1914 confirm that the understanding of these sincere Bible students was correct.” (19 th and early 20 th century Bible students believed the waiting period ended in 1878).

Errors are forgivable - but prefacing those errors with statements like “indisputable”, “without question”, "these are God's dates not ours”. “this is not of man but of God”, “anyone who disagrees is against Jehovah”, and then disfellowshipping those who don’t swallow it all, is another matter. Sure scientists make mistakes, but they do not do that.
Follow this up with lies, deceit and misrepresentations to try and cover up those mistakes compounds the sin and shows anyone with an unbiased reasoning ability that the Watchtower a manmade organisation, not God’s.

Be careful jookbeard, or you will have one of those holy men with a turban and a beard issuing a fatwa because you have insulted The Prophet. And then another holy man (with or without turban and beard) will come looking for you to carry it out. Uh uh, and now by implying these people are intolerant and murderous they will probably come after me too.
BTY insearchoftruth4 – I did not wish to imply that Islam equals racist. There are racist everywhere, including fundamentalist Christians as well as fundamentalist Moslems. I only mentioned it because he was a devout believer, and I can never understand in this day and age how a devout believer in any faith can at the same time be a virulent racist.

I am very interested to know if any of those of you that were "born in" actually believed at any stage of your life that you were born into the "Truth". I don't mean when you were a child, we all believe what our parents tell us when we are young, but when you were capable of thinking for yourself. At what point did you realise that your parents were wrong, and this Religion was a fraud. Or was it a case that you just didn't want it, rebelled against it, and found out it was all wrong after you left?

If a scripture can be shown that Jehovah God "changes" his mind then are we to believe anything he says in the bible?
by booker-t ini have always been taught that jehovah god never changes his mind and he always carries out what he predicts.
then a friend of mine who is atheist showed me a scripture in the bible that caught me totally off guard.
it is in the book of jeremiah.

Interesting JK, it kind of makes the proposition that all of the Bible is equally inspired from God and consistent look a bit lame. So booker-t, you should not be surprised to find Jehovah changing his mind, for He is quite a different person in different books. And He must have had lots of regrets, for even as late as Jeremiah he was getting tired of them (Jer 15:6). But then He doesn't just feel regret for the bad things He had planned, He even had some for the good things He did as well (Jer 18:10).

And don’t forget “very soon”, in case “soon” isn’t soon enough. It’s been soon for a hundred years, and it will still be soon a hundred years from now. Just like the carrot on the stick in front of the donkey - it will never be reached.

I can see the attraction of Islam to certain types of men, but I find it difficult to understand why a woman would find it appealing.
A niece of mine converted to Islam, although she was born into JWs- never could quite understand that. Her husband is probably the most racist person I know, but I guess racism is not unique to any culture. From an outsider’s viewpoint they just seem culturally to be a century or two behind the rest of the world. I’ve not read it, but I can’t imagine being “blown away” by the Quran. By some of its fundamentalist practitioners perhaps, but not the book itself.

Do most people become Jehovah's Witnesses out of fear they might be destroyed at Armageddon ?
by Finkelstein ina practical question concerning human psychology .
it very well be that it was the jws who were.
responsible for first approaching this posing question to people to incite their interest and concern.. i can confidently say it was for my 20 something year old mother back in the early 50's.. unfortunately people who did so, weren't completely discerning the probable commercial .
